The right medicine for sinus infection to be used in the case of acute, uncomplicated cases of sinus problem is a synthetic penicillin such as amoxicilin (namely Amoxil, Polymox, or Trimox) is used. This antibiotic is relatively inexpensive and has good effectiveness against the usual microorganisms. But the main side effects of amoxicillin include allergic reactions (throat swelling, hives) and stomach upset.

Most of the time chronic sinus infections are initially treated with antibiotics. In order to decrease swelling in the nasal passages steroid nasal sprays may be used. And corrective surgery is required if an anatomic reason is found for chronic infections . If ever a surgical procedure is necessary for sinus treatment, samples are usually taken at the same time to allow identification of any organisms present which may be causing infection.
